Ministry of Information Reports Over 1,700 Cases of Fake Information in First Half of 2024

Phnom Penh, September 4, 2024 — The Ministry of Information of Cambodia has identified more than 1,700 instances of fake information in the first six months of 2024, representing a 12% increase compared to the same period in 2023 when 1,519 cases were recorded. These figures do not account for cases identified by other government bodies, institutions, or organizations.

According to Tep Asarith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, fake news is often generated by individuals or groups seeking personal or political gain, as well as economic advantages. The spread of false information poses significant risks to daily life, public order, and social harmony. It has the potential to disrupt societal peace and affect families and communities adversely.

To combat the growing threat of fake news, Tep Asarith urges citizens to adhere to several guidelines: refrain from hastily sharing unverified information, develop a habit of verifying news through reliable sources like newspapers, television, and official news websites, and promote this practice among others. He also encourages people to share only positive and verified information to maintain public safety and order.

Neth Pheaktra, Minister of Information, emphasized the Ministry's ongoing collaboration with various stakeholders to manage the information landscape effectively. The goal is to ensure information security and improve the quality and efficiency of information in alignment with the evolving needs of contemporary society.

The Ministry of Information continues to work on initiatives to enhance the digital information environment and curb the spread of misinformation, thereby safeguarding the well-being of the nation.
